Here's my recommendation to young people although many don't want to hear it. Go in the military and serve your country for three years. Preferably in a field related to what you want to do in the NPS. When you get out you have Veteran's Preference and three years job experience. The military time can count toward your NPS retirement. Being a vet is how I got into federal civil service.

As far as Death Valley goes your only hope at this time is to get on as a seasonal park ranger. They are not filling any permanent positions at this time due to budget problems. With your degree you could probably work in the Division of Interpretation and work with the Visitor Center staff.

If you can afford to live cheap then you might work as a volunteer. This gives you a chance to show them what you can do as well as get some on the job training. You will also make some contacts for 'networking'. It helps to know people.

If you are interested in law enforcement you can go to one of the agencies that are desparate, like the Border Patrol, and get a permanent "status" job. Then you can transfer over to NPS as a permanent employee.
