Another possibility is the National Geographic "Topo!" state map series on CD. The California set has all of the USGS 7.5' maps for the entire state scanned into 10 disks. There are higher level maps as well. The disks can be downloaded to a hard drive so you don't have to shuffle a lot of CD's. Amazon sells this for $89.99. Search for "National Geographic TOPO California." Good luck!
