We have found in the winter that it's best to base camp at the lower elevations for the night and do the exploring and hiking at the higher elevations during the day.
The valley may drop to the low 30's during the wee hours of the morning, but by that time your fast asleep in your tent.
We have froze our butts off at the Chloride Cliff and the Lost Burro in the past.
