The scariest park I have ever been in was Organ Pipe in Arizona. I had a rental Toyota Camry, and drove it fourteen miles on an unimproved washboarded road to some springs. The road ran paralell to the Mexico border. There was no form of isolation. There was no fence, barbed wire, or even a border patrol (or anyone for that matter) officer in sight. The only thing I saw was a freeway on the Mexico side 100 yards away, and dillapidated cabins. Spur roads connected the freeway and Organ Pipe.
Boy, it sure would have been easy to smuggle drugs there, I'm sure it happens sometimes. I was hoping that I would not run into anyone who might be a coyote, drug smuggler, or looking to rob a nice new rental car. The ranger said unattended cars at the springs were broken into a lot, but I could see a single tourist run into foul play possibly.
